What does an Operations Accounting and Regulatory Reporting Professional do?

Operations Accounting and Regulatory Reporting Professionals jobs may vary from company to company. Some focus on a facility or a property, while others specialize in one aspect of the work, e.g. royalties. Typical jobs include:

  • Operations Accountants: Ensure components of the income statement and balance sheet are properly reported. They monitor the bottom line which includes production costs, overhead rates, and penalty/payout interests. They also ensure that contracts are accurately represented in the financial results.
  • Production Accountants: Calculate production volumes and rates, gas/oil ratios, and associated royalties. They analyze invoices, process royalty payments and report information as per regulatory guidelines.

How do I become an Operations Accounting and Regulatory Reporting Professional?

A degree or post secondary diploma in a relevant field is ideal. Depending on the job, this could mean business, accounting, land administration, property accounting, joint venture accounting or petroleum technology.

Tailored education programs are available. For instance, the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in partnership with The Centre for Energy Asset Management Studies (CEAMS) offers an Energy Asset Management diploma. The Canadian Association of Petroleum Production Accounting (CAPPA) offers a certificate program which provides a foundation in petroleum production accounting.

Other options to consider include certificates in Petroleum Land Contract & Administration and Petroleum Joint Venture, available through post-secondary educational institutions.

What are the working conditions like?

These jobs are mostly located in company's head offices, but some positions are at the plant or facility sites. Regular business hours are the norm.
