With the right training and education, you'll be on the fast-track to an exciting career in the oil and gas industry! There is a wealth of knowledge just waiting to be tapped into, by potential workers just like you. Many public and private institutions offer a variety of courses specific to oil and gas. Courses might include learning about the basics of the oil and gas industry, oil and gas safety training, certifications, degrees and diplomas.

Professional certifications, college diplomas and university degrees can take you far in the oil and gas industry. Math, science and computer courses are particularly valuable in most job sectors, as much of the equipment used in the field requires you to deal with instrumentation, computers and chemicals.

The types of courses and training vary by occupation, so be sure to research your education options well in advance to starting your career in the industry.

You can find a wide variety of oil and gas jobs that range from entry-level labour and helper positions in the oilpatch, to more specialized careers in geosciencesand engineering.

Some basic skills for success in the oil and gas industry are:

  • Grade 12 education (other specialized / professional careers may require a diploma or degree)
  • Proficient in the English language - reading, writing, speaking and listening / comprehension
  • Problem solving and decision making skills
  • Planning and organizational skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Use of documentation skills (plans, directions, maps, etc.)

  • Good listening skills
