While oil and gas operations are located across Canada, activity
is concentrated in western Canada (British
Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan)
and the east coast (Newfoundland
and Labrador and Nova Scotia. Each
of our oil and gas locations sections
provides information on communities near oil and gas activity. One
of them may become your future home!
But that doesn't mean you should just move to one of these
communities right away. Don't uproot yourself and your family until
you have a job you want and a place to live nearby. Follow our tips
for finding a job in oil and
gas before you even think of moving.
- If you receive a job offer in another
community, do some research to find out about the location,
housing, schools, transportation, culture, weather, cost of living
and other aspects that will affect your lifestyle and that of your
family. Accommodation in smaller, more remote communities can be
difficult to find and expensive, so pay particular attention to
finding a place to live. Also check to see that your spouse will
have employment options and try to get a sense of whether or not
you and your family will fit well into the new
community.
- For some jobs - like those
offering fly in fly out options, you may not even have
to move. You may be offered on-site accommodation in a camp. This
is more common in the oil sands sector.
- For other jobs, you may have to live
in one place and work in another. Make sure you ask your potential
employer about all the possibilities, and find out if there is any
relocation assistance available for you.
- Relocating is a major decision that
requires careful planning, research and discussion with your
family. Consider talking to a professional career counselor to help
you explore your options and understand the steps involved in
relocating. Visit your local Service Canada Centre for assistance or call 1
800 O-Canada (1-800-622-6232) for career services in your
area.
