About the Industry
The oil and gas industry is a natural for Canada. Under our vast lands, Canada holds about 179 billion barrels of established crude oil reserves, the second largest oil reserves in the world (after Saudi Arabia). Our natural gas reserves currently stand at 57.9 trillion cubic feet. That's what's still underground. Every day, the petroleum industry in Canada produces and sells more than 2.6 million barrels of oil and 17.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas.
Some of that oil and gas is sold to markets throughout Canada. But most of the resource is exported. Exporting about 1.8 million barrels per day of crude oil and about 10 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas, the petroleum industry makes significant contributions to the domestic economy as a large-scale employer of skilled workers and through direct investment and taxes.
Global demand for crude oil and natural gas has risen steadily over the last 20 years, and new technologies have made formerly inaccessible deposits available for production. Most of Canada's future oil production will come from the oil sands area, and more companies are moving people to those regions.
Because of Canada's abundant petroleum resources, innovative technology and ongoing high demand for oil and gas, there is a lot of work to go around! Companies are actively recruiting skilled employees in all parts of the industry.
